It works together with an alho or pestle, a long wooden stick that is used to grind food material inside the lusong. Lusong and alho processes food such as grains and seeds by pounding the alho or pestle against the lusong or mortar. Used over burning coals, the clay pots are used to cook traditional Filipino dishes and may also be used as a storage or container.
